WHY ENTREPRENEURS NEED A PERSONAL TRAINER
By Tania Tetrault Vrga
I’m a business owner, which means that just like you, my to-do list is never ending.
Just when I think I’m catching up, there’s another fire to put out, another urgent task to complete. I recently switched up my exercise routine from solo gym workouts and group classes to personal training. I feel amazing, and I’m saving both time and money. Here’s why.
As an entrepreneur, my job involves making a lot of decisions.
I make decisions about the business’ mission and vision, about my staff, about the services we offer, and the experience we provide for our clients. It’s frightening how much time I need to think. I use this time to weigh the pros and cons, make decisions, and construct a plan of action. Whether you are a business owner, a stay-at-home parent, a manager, an academic, or a professional, it’s likely you understand that the burden of decision making is exhausting. You might start the day off with energy and clarity, but after making a few dozen, or a few hundred, decisions over the course of the day, you get tired. This is called decision fatigue. Having a personal trainer allows me to show up and work hard, without having to think. I can exercise without adding to the decision-making burden. The appointment is set, and I have to show up no matter what. I prefer not having the option to bail on my workout. That would be another decision that would add to the burden.
I’ve also found that my trainer can help me make the most of my gym time.
That’s where saving time and money comes in. I used to work out for 2 hours 5 or 6 days per week. Now I get better results with just 1 hour 3 times per week. That’s because my trainer focuses on what I need, and doesn’t waste time on what I don’t need. Because I train one-on-one with my personal trainer, I don’t have to share his times and attention with any other students in a class. The workout is perfectly dedicated to me, every single time. It also means that I can allocate those extra hours to build my business, while getting similar results.
Lastly, my trainer customizes my program to my goals.
My goals are currently focused on optimizing cognitive performance and emotional health. If looking good is a side effect of my exercise routine, I’ll gladly take it, but my priority is to feel great. On the other hand, group classes are most often focused on weight loss or general physical preparedness. As much as I love them, they won’t get me to my goals as quickly as a customized program will. And while I have the knowledge to design my own custom workouts at the local gym, these days I’d rather not spend the time thinking about it. Luckily, my trainer does all of that for me. It increases my physical capacity, which in turn improves my mental capacity. It’s a win-win.
