Episode 1

Welcome to the very first episode, the introductory episode of the Life of Tania podcast. In this episode, we introduce the podcast. Every week, we’ll share some fitness and wellness strategies, either in the form of an interview with a subject matter expert, or in a solo episode, where I’ll share some of my experiences from over a decade as a gym owner, and almost twenty years as a health and fitness enthusiast.

We’ll discuss not just your traditional physical fitness, but what I call physical culture, which includes but is not limited to CrossFit, yoga, bodybuilding, powerlifting, olympic weightlifting, mobility, kettlebells, primal movement, endurance sports, and sports in general. We also discuss mental, emotional, and cognitive health, personal development, and mindfulness. Most episodes will run between 40 minutes and an hour, but this intro episode will be a bit shorter as it is an introductory solo episode.

In this episode, as we start a new year, a new decade and a new podcast, I share the 11 things I’ve learned about health and fitness over the past 11 years as a gym owner and fitness and wellness coach. These are broad principles, for specific tips or recommendations, you need to tune in to future episodes. These lessons are not only about fitness, but they apply to life as well. Enjoy!

More About Tania

Tania is the founder and owner of North Star Fitness, originally CrossFit Winnipeg. After overcoming major health problems in her late teens and early twenties, Tania was able to successfully treat her mood disorder with lifestyle, exercise, and nutrition, where CrossFit played an essential role in her recovery. Tania left her career in as an analyst to help others do the same, and CrossFit Winnipeg was born in 2008, and opened its doors at its first location on Des Meurons in 2009.

Since then, CrossFit Winnipeg has helped thousands through various fitness and lifestyle programs including CrossFit, bootcamp, youth programs, 50+ programs, personal training and so much more. In 2019, we launched North Star Fitness as the home of CrossFit Winnipeg, and the many other programs offered in house, including personal training, Mommy & Me, Youth programs, and partnerships with Deezar-Raval Physiotherapy, Dakota Weightlifting Club, and Legendary Living Arts.

Tania now splits her time between training clients and mentoring her team at North Star Fitness, teaching courses such as Kettlebells as an Agatsu Fitness Senior Instructor, and creating content. Tania writes a bi-weekly column in the Can Star community newspaper, weekly North Star Fitness Blogs and e-mail newsletters, and YouTube videos. Tania is also available for speaking engagements, and gives talks on mental health, self-care, and fitness and wellness in general.

What We Talk About in this Episode

For a long time I pretty much live at the gym.  There is a couch in my office and I have been known to sleep there on occasion. It is home and it is filled with people I consider my family. In many ways, the gym is also my classroom. Here are some of the things I’ve learned at the gym, about training and about life in general.
  • It’s important to identify priorities and treat them as such. Otherwise, you’ll never get anywhere.
  • There is no such thing as the right time or the right place. Starting is the hardest part, do it now!
  • Everyone is different so don’t worry about what others think of you.  Don’t waste any precious mental energy worrying about what others think, just focus on lifting and living.
  • Consistency is everything but change is how we grow and improve. You need to commit and build habits to make things happen, but if you never try anything new you will never learn anything new.
  • Have something you can always come back to when you have a bad day. Bad days will happen, and you need a plan.
  • Principles over methods. Be Method agnostic. If there’s a single thing that I’ve most changed my mind about in the fitness industry is this notion of any particular training system being superior to another.
  •  Don’t mistake problems for mysteries. Not everything in health and fitness, or in life for that matter, is some big secret waiting to be discovered.
  • Embrace the journey. Destinations are fun to dream about, but it’s the everyday actions that dictate success.
  • Understand the difference between fault and responsibility. Don’t be a victim, it’s your responsibility, no one else’s.
  • Honour Your Ancestors. Never underestimate evolution as a guidepost to human fitness and wellbeing.
  • Give yourself some grace. Part of respecting nature is to respect ourselves. Working out and eating well only translates to results if we do it out of genuine self-love and compassion.
