HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY!

January 2011 Member of the Month: Nicole Stewart

Nicole the CrossFitter, Nicole the runner

We’ve had several men featured in the past few months, so this month we have a female as member of the month.  Nicole started at CrossFit Winnipeg in June of last year.  All our athletes are special in their own way, but Nicole reminded me of what makes her special when she sent me a clipping from a running magazine about how CrossFit can be integrated into an endurance athlete’s training. She also included a note that she had run her best marathon since starting CrossFit.  We all know that you need to run to be good at running, but what CrossFitters also know is that general physical preparedness is a base on which you can build more specific skills.  Nicole is proof!  She looks great, is getting stronger and faster every day.  Congrats Nicole!

Age: 33

Height: 5’6″

Weight: 139

What is your favourite exercise or workout? Deadlifts & back squats, because I feel I’ve made major gains during the recent, awesome strength programming.  But I also love GHD raises & situps… so tough & so satisfying!

What is your least favourite exercise or workout? Wallballs win this lucky spot!

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself? I’m scared of the 24” box.  Haven’t jumped it yet!  Likely an unreasonable fear since I have jumped from a plane & bungy jumped from a bridge.  Maybe if I start by jumping off the box I’ll get over the fear of that box 😉

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? I love to spend every chance I get outdoors, year-round!   Quading is my favourite pastime.  Riding out to the middle of nowhere & having a winter cookout over a fire with friends, that’s my idea of fun.  My favourite sport is running, whether it’s competition or just a long run with my running crew or my Weimarener, Eva.

What were you doing before CrossFit? Running.  Looking back now I feel I should insert Forrest Gump quote here!

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? I was at a friends house one day & she just had to tell me about what her friend Kristen was doing.  My friends quote went something like this “My friend Kristen is doing this CrossFit.  I think it’s crazy!  But I bet you’d like it.”  We went on the website & she was right.  I signed up for on-ramp the next week!  …thanks D.

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Initially, it was the realization that all my running had made me good at… well… running!   Now, I’m 4 months into CrossFit, completed the 30 day real food challenge & I’ve discovered I can be good at more than just running.  I’ve lost 3.7% body fat, & a combined 11.6” off my thighs, hips, waist, & chest.   To sum it up: I now feel truly strong, & I’m not just talking about my new found muscles.  I mean at life!  I’m more in love with life than ever.  Each morning that I leave CrossFit @ 7am I am guaranteed to leave grinning and proud of whatever I accomplished that day.

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? One that stands out was during on-ramp, learning to climb a rope.  Not even in elementary school could I ever climb a rope.  That day I climbed a rope!  Just goes to show with coaching, good instruction & fellow CrossFitters cheering you on, you can do anything!  I think I told everyone I saw that day,”I climbed a rope this morning”

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? I remember thinking during on-ramp “Oh crap, look what those guys are doing in the group class!”  I was intimidated to leave my on-ramp comfort zone, afraid I couldn’t keep up with the group class.   I couldn’t have been more wrong! The coaches are amazing.  And all others in the groups are beyond supportive.  They have each managed so quickly to know me, know my limits, accommodate them & even better yet challenge me to push them.   To a newbie: stick it out, you’ll love it.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? I’m still at a point where everyday I accomplish something new, something heavy, something tough, something fast or something I’ve never done before.  My biggest accomplishment at CrossFit so far is discovering what my new love, CrossFit, has done for my old love running: a marathon PR in Victoria this fall, thanks to CrossFit WOD’s I blew away my previous times!  CrossFit, you made me stronger, faster, & (stolen from I can’t remember who) you make me just plain: not suck at life.
