CFW Weekly Update for December 24th, 2017

It’s December 24th and I’m sitting in a diner catching up on some work. It could be argued that I don’t have much to celebrate right now. Just last week, as I was preparing to take a few days off to spend with my family, I found out that two of my great aunts had passed away. Yesterday I drove out to the country for one of the funerals and drove back to Winnipeg to celebrate Christmas with my husband and son. The plan for today was to get a workout in and wish our members a merry Christmas. On my way to the gym, the battery light on my car lit up and I realized that I’d have to bring my car in to the shop before I could settle into my Christmas celebrations. Thankfully I got the chance to stop by the gym and see a few of you before racing off to get my car looked after. So here I sit, waiting for the car to get fixed. It’s not how I planned to spend Christmas Eve but somehow it feels like an opportunity. Just yesterday I was talking to some of our members about looking forward to slowing down a bit during the new year, and savouring each moment. So here I am slowing down, taking some time to reflect on the past year. Careful what you wish for…

Despite of, or perhaps because of the challenges of the past few days, my heart is filled with gratitude. I’m thankful for some time to reflect. I’m thankful for  the opportunity to see friends and family, and share stories of my great aunt’s 91 years of life. I’m thankful for the occasional reminder of the fragility and preciousness of life. Birth, death, a bad workout, a good workout, a car breaking down, or an unexpected gift – things can change in an instant. We tend to respond to change as if it were a bad thing, we experience stress and want to hang on to the way things have always been. What if these perceived obstacles are actually the catalyst for positive change?  After all, each challenge we face has transformative value. Each moment, whether happy or sad, easy or difficult, has the power to transform us if we let it. I’m even thankful for the tough times, and the hard decisions that have led me to become the person I am today. I am grateful for all the moments that have led to CrossFit Winnipeg being what it is today. I’m thankful for every chance encounter that has blossomed into a meaningful connection. I’m thankful for having crossed paths with every one of our staff members, who work selflessly to serve our community. I’m thankful for every single member. Each of you has chosen to take obstacles and turn them into opportunity for self-actualization. Each of you has taken ownership of your health and your life.  Thank you for making 2017 CFW’s best year ever!

I’d like to wish you all a holiday filled with joy, peace and gratitude. I hope that all of our members get the chance to savour the precious moments of the holidays. As things get busy, diets go awry, training gets waylaid, it’s easy to forget what’s important.  I recently read somewhere that instead of giving presents, we should “give presence”.  I love this and it is my Christmas wish for you!

Merry Christmas!
